Aliens ranks highly among both the best and worst things for movie sequels. The good is what you’ll already know, whether you’ve seen the movie or not: Aliens is a great sequel because it’s really quite different to its predecessor. The bad is what only occurred to me as I considered what came after it: James Cameron put the idea in the heads of Ridley Scott et al. that this was a world that needed to be exhaustively explored. Blade Runner

A blade runner must pursue and try to terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.

There was only one condition for my viewing of Blade Runner, and that was that I watch it with my dad. For ten years or more, he’s hailed it as his favourite film. Now, after my first viewing in a decade, I am able to appreciate its undeniable beauty – even if the philosophical elements are still lost on me. Gladiator

When a Roman general is betrayed and his family murdered by an emperor’s corrupt son, he comes to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge.

gladiator002My family and I have a running joke about Gladiator. My brother has seen this film more times than anybody I know, but I doubt he remembers what it’s really about – he was no older than five at the time. My parents used to let him sit in front of the TV with Gladiator playing on a loop. All 155 minutes of R-rated Roman glory. Despite this, he’s surprisingly well-adjusted.
